Navigational Systems and Equipment

A ship may be equipped with equipment and navigational systems to help with determining its position, charting its directional course of voyage, as references for communication, for avoidance of collisions, as means to signaling to other ships or shore when in distress, and for measurement of speed, distances, depth and other operational indications.

Some of the equipment and navigational systems are listed below. Sometimes some of the equipment need not be installed if alternative means of meeting the requirement of the regulations are permitted:

  • Compass
  • Standard magnetic compass
  • Spare magnetic compass
  • Gyro compass
  • Gyro compass heading repeater
  • Gyro compass bearing repeater
  • Heading or track control system
  • Pelorus or compass bearing system
  • Means of correcting heading and bearings
  • Transmitting heading device (THD)
  • Nautical Charts (or Electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS)
  • Back up arrangements for ECDIS
  • Nautical publications
  • Back up arrangements for nautical publications
  • Receiver for a global navigation satellite system / terrestrial radionavigational system
  • 9 GHz radar
  • Second radar
  • Automatic radar plotting aid (ARPA)
  • Automatic tracking aid
  • Second automatic tracking aid
  • Electronic plotting aid
  • Automatic identification system (AIS)
  • Long-range identification and tracking system (LRIT)
  • Voyage data recorder (VDR)
  • Simplified voyage data recorder (S-VDR)
  • Speed and distance measuring device (through the water)
  • Speed and distance measuring device (over the ground in the forward and athwartship direction)
  • Echo sounding device
  • Rudder, propeller, thrust, pitch and operational mode indicator
  • Rate of turn indicator
  • Sound reception system
  • Telephone to emergency steering position
  • Daylight signalling lamp
  • Radar reflector
  • International Code of Signals
  • IAMSAR Manual, Volume III
