Shipyard training
Ship dockyard training is essential for the young
marine engineer apprentice. The shipyard is the place where ships come in for major repairs. The marine engineer will be able to observe and work with skilled tradesmen to do various repairs on the many types of main engines, boilers, pumps, shafting, hull, deck machinery, from different types of ships.
He will also be able to observe how riggers transport heavy equipment, how mechanics open up huge propellers, how hull painters clear barnacles from hulls, how boiler repairs are done, how piping are renewed, and valves reconditioned, and many others.
Read about the experiences of a Marine Engineer who brings his ship for dry-docking.
